At a family birthday party this past weekend, my husbands cousin Matt (20years old) annouced that he was gay. I never seen so many adults fall to there knees and pray to God. It was crazy, they acted like it was the end of the world. Then after the shock wore off they all decided this was something cureable. Like if he went to counciling he woulkd be all "better" in a month. What the hell? It started to make my wheels turn..are they right?? Is being gay something "fixable"? Can you change your self with counciling? Will you be "fixed" forever or just temporarly? What do you all think?

No it is not fixable. If a man says he is gay and truely means it and has no doubts about his sexuality then he is gay. He can't change it. Studies have been done on the matter and some researchers believe that it is something chemical inside the body and has nothing to do with choice. Think about it, are you straight by choice? No you just feel it and know it by whom you are attracted to.

Not only is it not fixable, but the programs that claim to help homosexuals "recover" can cause serious psychological trauma.

The most important fact about "reparative therapy," also sometimes known as "conversion" therapy, is that it is based on an understanding of homosexuality that has been rejected by all the major health and mental health professions. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of Social Workers, together representing more than 477,000 health and mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus there is no need for a "cure."

If people are scared enough of homosexuality they will be prepared to do just about anything. That sort of 'councelling' f**ks with peoples' heads, it'll mess him up a lot. Now if one thinks homosexuality is pure evil, perhaps that doesn't bother one very much... but that is a horrible thing to do to someone.

You seem to be on to the truth, speak to Matt and don't rely on second-hand information. Idiots always quote their pastor or neighbor like they would know about these things.

Gay is not fixable, it's not a physical ailment. It's something inside him that says he is attracted to other men. Support him. He'll need all he can get if the entire family is praying for his saving.

At that age most people tend to think that it is just a phase and that he'll change his mind. It is up to the person. I thought I was gay when I was 18, but ended up being bi.

The people who started praying at the announcement are the ones who need curing. Rational thought would be a start for them, however unfamiliar they are with the concept at present.
