connect it to something tangible, a manipulative of some sort. For instance .... write the number 5 on a piece of construction paper, then have them count out 5 beans or buttons & place on paper. Kids that age really need something concrete, not just the abstract number 5.

Or practice 1 number a day ... write the number on construction paper & have them make groups with that number of items on their paper. For instance, a group of 5 star stickers, a group of 5 pictures cut from a magazine, etc.

Peggy Kaye's book of math games also has a whole load of other ideas. I'll get a link for it:

She's got even more great ideas for teaching math ... and other books that address learning to read etc. I checked them out from my library, but they are also available to purchase on amazon.com or ebay.

As a preschool assistant what I do when a child is having difficulty learning numbers is I play concentration with them with 2 numbers at a time. I start with 0&1. Make a lot of cards. explain to him/her these are the numbers we are going to learn. Let them know that if they make a match they get to keep those cards. You take a turn then they take a turn. Another thing I do that the children like to play is number on a body part. I take a number and I say There's a number 1 on your head, now there's a number 1 on your knee, ect. Then after you have finished you asek them what number is on your head and they tell you. what number is on your knee and they tell you. Make it fun. Some children take more stimulation to learn than others. Hope this helps.

Find something that your child is really interested in and connect the numbers in some way. Hands on learning is meaningful, but it becomes even more meaningful when it makes a connection with the child. Flashcards (Drill & Kill) are not the best way to go about it. Did you have fun being drilled on those things in school? Think of it from you child's point of view and make it fun for them. Anyway, if he doesn't learn them before school starts, believe me, he will not be the only one in his class in that position. Every child learns at a different pace.

Your question must be "how do you get a five year old to learn the numbers off hand or by heart''.
You may use snacks or food that he can count like chocolates os sweets or so and from then you can go to real numbers plackard and please don't be harsh on him at all.
Try and make it easy for him and let it go with a promise that if he learns it fast there is a reward for it which i believe you will fulifll to encourage him next time.
And also everybody loves to be appreciated talkless of little one . Always appreciate and praise him with soft and good words whenever he makes any little effort at all.Good luck with him then.i Know you can do it so go ahead.be good.

Try to stimulate the child more by using something that he or she would enjoy. Try taking M&M's and sorting them into piles each one containing an amount from 1- 10. Then, above each pile have a flash card. Tell him or her to tell you what the number is and to count the number of M&M's that there are. If he or she answsers correctly they can eat them! (you can use anything you want cookies, beads, toy cars, jelly-beans ect.) Good Luck!

I teach kids what the numerals look like by singing a song for each numeral. I can't think of which piggy back tune it is, but for number one, the song goes: Down you run, and that's a one, down you run and that's a one, down you run and that's a run; writing the number one!
Two is : Around the curve and down, slide to the right (3x), Writing the number two!
I teach children with special needs, so the more senses or intelligences you incorporate into your teaching methods, the better they'll retain it.

I have a friend who teaches second grade. She uses chocolate pudding spread on a piece of wax paper for each student to practice numbers and letters. They get a delicious snack which makes learning fun.

I guess just play counting games. You know like count the amount of things in the pile and then pull the correct number to represent your answer. Repitition is the key. The more they see the number and its connection the quicker they will get it.

How do you use your flash cards, try laying them out flat and asking the child to locate a certain number that you call out, or make it a game.
Try going online and look up file folder games these are great tools and you can make them yourself

Put everything in context. Supermarkets are great places for kids to learn about numbers. So are elevators (if there are any high rise buildings in your vicinity).
