I just got "Samson" last night. He let me hold him last night and I loved on him to ease his fear. Now this morning, he won't come out of his box. He growls at me if i get too close. Now I feel bad. Should I just give him his space and let him get accustom to our family? I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing for him.

:You need to get him out of the crate. He's taken up refuge in there, and feels safe, which is good, but not if he's snarling and holing up in there. After you get him out, see how he responds. Chichahua's are naturally very timid and snippy dogs, so it could be that his natural instincts are in over load due to his new situation and his fears. If it keeps up for long, he may not be the dog for you

First off, last night, you fed his fear by petting him....Second, I agree with Sweet Ivy Lyn...chihuahua's are in the top ten most aggressive list (only beaten out by pitts and chows)...not all dogs are aggressive...as a kid, we owned a "sissy" chow...friends have a pitt that is a lover not a fighter!...leave him alone today...let him settle in...if the behavior continues, you are going to have a fight on your hands!....in this case, be prepared to get bit!....if you have satellite, "the dog whisper" is a good show to watch for some ideas.....long walks make a tired dog, a tired dog does not put up much of a fight.

He's trying to assert control over you by showing that he's the Alpha Dog...don't let him; If I were you, I'd put on some gloves that he can't bite through and try to hold him and pet him more; give him snacks when he's good. Chihuahua's have "odd" temperaments....sometimes, you'll get a good one, more times then not, I think they're just ankle biters and aren't very friendly. call a trainer to help you...hope you know what you got yourself into...

With the current rush for Chihuahua pups, some of them are bound to have lousy mentalities. Sell him back to his breeder (I assume that you bought him from a serious breeder and not a puppy mill/pet shop, in which case you have yourself to blame) and get yourself a new one with a decent temperament.

Sorry if I sound hard, consider it tough love. A serious breeder will stand by you through this where as a puppy dealer could not care less.

Definitely give him space. Just go about your normal daytime routine. He might just need a day or two to adjust to the new living situation, and would prefer to do so, without being bothered.

He'll come around. He's just stressed and confused about the new place he woke up at.

Your ok. The dog needs his space. When he wants you he will come out. Than you can start walking him and earning his respect. All you can do is feed and water him. Make sure he gets his daily thing taken care of. Good Luck.

Chihuahua are strange little dogs. They need time to ajust to their surroundings. my chihuahua likes to stay in her carrier. Just give him a little space when hes in his box. That is where he feels safe. When he is comfortable he will come out and be ready to play.

You should just drop a treat in his box and give him some space.

according to the vet you aren't supposed to hold him/her on the day/night you get him you're supposed to hold him a day or two after so I'd let him have his space for 2 days let him get used to his new home
