Don't you worry, my dear. You're in a unique group!
One of the famous lefties now is the Spanish tennis sensation, Rafael Nadal, who's number 2 in the world rankings for professional men's tennis.
I wanna share a secret - now it isn't a secret anymore - waaah! I was a leftie during my infant-early childhood years. But when i started school at 4, the teacher made me use my right-hand instead of the left. She even told my parents that a leftie may have difficulty adjusting in the adult world. Waaah! But now, I am ambidextrous, i can write with both hands, although on most tasks I use my right. There's just one thing i can't do with my right that my left does so good, i.e. using the scissors!

There is a great deal of speculation, all of it circular reasoning. The presumption is "left-handedness is bad". So, people (I hesitate to call them "scientists") start looking for "evidence" to show that left-handers aren't as good as right-handers. There have been some inconclusive studies that show a possible slightly higher death-by-accident rate for left-handers, but the "scientists" who published it cannot rule out the explanation that this is merely an artifact of having to deal with an awkwardly-constructed society, not an innate trait of left-handedness.
Many explanations of left-handedness have been promulgated, all of them demolished by actual scientific investigation. Indeed, it is not even a recessive genetic trait. An explanation that works as well as any other is that it's just the result of a random event that has been maintained as an evolutionarily neutral trait. Evolutionarily neutral traits do not have to be "evenly" distributed in the population, they just persist and have no specific selective advantage nor disadvantage.
So, why are there so few left-handers? It just randomly fell out that way, no real "reason" in the sense we usually use the term. However, that possibility scares at lot of people, so they keep inventing "reasons" to make themselves feel better.

Its a pain isn't it? I'm left handed as well, the only one in my immediate family so far. At work out of 14 people 5 of us are left handed a very high number to have in one place.
When I was growing up one of my teachers in grade school used to smack me on the wrist if I used my left hand to write. I used to get the biggest headaches after trying to write. After awhile I learned how to write with both hands.
As far as knowing any famous people....well I am working on being famous so I suppose that counts.

Because it's a recessive trait. I know back in the day therapists would change left handed people into right handed people because it was weird. My sister was one of those. When she started school in 1983, they found that she was left handed. They gave her therapy to learn to be right handed. Her hand writing has been nasty ever since.
Apparently that happened a lot, too.

I'm left handed, and so is my daughter, and my neice. I am the first left handed person in my family. (that I know of) I'm assuming they got it from me) I know of no other's in my family that are, but I'd like to know someday. I've heard left handers are smarter, then what happened to me? I do a lot of "right-handed" things like cutting coupons, the only thing I do with my left hand is write, everything else is done right handed, go figure. Both my parents, and grandparents and sister is right handed, but I'm the only one, left handed in my family.

I think it is all about genetic selection and the development of mankind thousands of years ago, and social customs. The left is always evil and the right is always virtuous.
I am right handed, but I can not do some things right handed to save my life: shoot pool, deal cards, peel eggs, and some other things, I will keep switching hands to do them because one gets tired.

I think left handed people are smarter because they use the right side of their brains. I think you will see more and more lefties as time goes by. As late as the mid-seventies, teachers were trying to switch my oldest son to be right-handed. My husband, one of my children and two of my grandchildren are lefties. Sorry I don't know any famous lefties.
