Better question. How on earth did you manage to stop on a stop sign? Did you run into it and knock the pole down then stop on the sign? The impact from hitting the pole may have actually caused the car to turn off.

The car's idle speed is too low, or the gas mixture too rich. It can also be a clogged air filter or a timing chain being off.

This can be adjusted easily. See a mechanic.

Any number of things ranging from electrical system to air intake system, its hard to say the best way to find out is to take it to a mechanic and have it inspected and tested.

is it an automatic or a standard?
if its a standard, you have to push the clutch in all the way before you stop, with an automatic it could be fuel or air intake problems.
