Plasma and LCD are different products for different applications. One is not really better than the other. It is true that LCD's are slightly brighter and more resistant to high levels of ambient sunlight in the room due to the fact that the screen is not glass, therefore less reflective of light. Due to the nature of the design of LCD's, it is difficult to create good black level. The screen is backlit by high output lamps that are always on, the lcd panel combines all its colors together to try to block the light coming through to give you a sense of black. Most LCD's therefore have more of a dark grey reproduction rather than black which makes the picture more flat looking and 2-Dimensional. Compared to a plasma TV, a plasma can produce better black level due to its design, where it is not backlit. The front pane of glass has phosphors painted on the back and when electrons are fired at the screen, it excites the phosphors to produce varying levels of light. There are three different colored phosphors for every pixel on a plasma, blue, green and red. In this way, plasma's can control light output more effictively than an lcd, therefore producing better black level. This gives a more 3-Dimensional Video experience that is more like Film-Based presentations like in the movie theatres. Plasma's also have a faster refresh rate giving you smooth motion picture. Viewing angle is another difference between the two. LCD's although they have come along way in this department, they still have a somewhat limited viewing angle off-axis, but plasma's do not have this weakness whatsover. So as far as many of the myths go, plasma's do not need to be refilled ever, last extremely long(most current plasma's have a life to half brightness span of 60,000 hours, that's 5 hours a day, 365 days a year for 32 years!!!), and burn in is not a big issue as they would have you believe. I have a 4 year old Sony plasma and my son has left his video games on pause for 4 hours with a static image. It is true that this caused a ghosted image to be left in the screen, but there is a screen saver function within the TV that easily removed this using a white screen. Todays sets are far more resiliant and have better systems for removing any ghosted image. Today it would take many, many hours left on with a static image to cause any permanent damage. Bottom line is that each has certain strengths and weaknesses. For larger screen sizes, plasma's are more cost effective. Most LCD sizes end at 46", where plasma's start at 42" and go to 65". Only Sharp has any LCD panels over 46" in size and they are still well over $10,000 for 57"+ sizes, but they are the first 1080p panels and are quite amazing. I have both in my home and enjoy them greatly. I have also sold many of both technologies to customers. Many people today have both LCD's and Plasma TV's in there homes, just as many people have diffent cars for different needs, so is there choice on TV's.

LCD because the technology is better and i've always felt the image is sharper. LCD also uses less energy. a plasma uses 5x the amount of electricity as a normal tv, and has a less overall lifespan.

Plasma, the technology is better. Also there is a very good reason you don't see many LCD's over 37". Check out the Pioneer Elite

As long as it is flat screened, easily mounted, and flat mounted with a great picture, I'm happy with either. I guess it could also depend on the price too, but I don't want to pay 2000 for a sucky picture when I could pay 2500 for a great picture. (Those are hypothetical prices, just an analogy, I know they can be more expensive...)

But if I had to choose...I have a LCD (not 50 in.) and love it. The picture is awesome. I guess I would pick LCD because I've had experience with one before, but I'd be grateful of any TV if someone gave me one. LOL. (not trying to imply anything...)

The Plasma TV will require re-gassing in a year or so and the cost will be around a thousand dollars.

LCD. Plasma is not going anywhere. Cost to manufacture are still prohibitive, and they don't last long.
