Stem cells are cells which haven't decided what they are going to be yet. Basically the theory is, wherever you put a stem cell in the body, it will form that kind of cell, and there's no rejection like with a transplant. So if your liver is sick, you could put some stem cells into it and they'd grow into healthy liver cells. (Right now they can't grow a new liver.). Parkinson and Alzheimer's are physical diseases of the brain. The brain is literally dying. If stem cells could bridge the gaps of the dying and dead cells, even if the person lost some memories, those memories could be relearned and any lost physical motions could also be learned.
Countries in Asia are doing a lot of work with stem cells because they don't have the government restrictions that the US has. The reason we have so many restrictions is because the stem cell lines we have came from discarded embryos and Bush is pro-life (except for the civilians in Iraq). There are other ways we can get stem cells but I believe every way has been banned by his veto. I'm not an expert in this but I thought I'd give a plain language layman's view.
