Well, there are two basic reasons that a person would go around shouting out what they believe and trying to convince others that it is true.

#1) it is a matter of life and death- if someone had a surefire cure for cancer , you can bet they would not keep it to themselves- if someone had fallen overboard and I had the life preserver- you can bet I would be screaming as loud as I can to get their attention

#2) Pride and arrogance, an attitude of I am right and you are wrong.

Now I am not saying that there are not Christians who operate under pride and arrogance, I have been guilty of it myself. But for the most part, I know that there is a life and death issue and I for one want to tell people how to have life.

Now from the athiest point of view, if they are right (which oyu know they are not) then it should not matter what anyone believes. If there is no god and we all just die and become nothing more than worm food, then there is no consequence to what we believe and how we live our lives- it just ends anyway. If they TRULY believed that then they really would not care what people believed, learned, or understood -it would not matter because we are all equal in hte end.

The fact is that the pride and arrogance are a poor cover up for the fact that no matter how loudly someone protests, there is a place in them crying out for God, crying out for truth and a purpose in life- they were created for fellowship with god and nothing else will quench that need. we all have a desire to exalt self and deny that place inside of us that cries out for the Lord- Some people break and come to that place quickly, for some it is a journey and for others, there is such a strong denial, that anything that says otherwise is met with rebellion and defiance. How else can you explain such strong feelings if we were in fact just going to be worm food in the end.
Everyone was created for fellowship with God, and no matter how hard and fast you try to run, God is always calling for you. You are never going to escape that place inside of you that cries out for your creator, your Father. . . and continuing to refuse that call will only breed more hatred, more rebellion, more defiance especially directed towards those walking in the truth. There is no point in getting angry or frustrated in return- that only reveals the pride and arrogance in ourselves.

Christianity is possibly one of the most abrasive religions in history. Christians don't preach, they FORCE religion and their way of life down the throats of others. It is very different from the idea of simply spreading religion or the "good word."

There's no fear of Christianity itself because it's simply a way of living like Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, etc etc etc. And, we've never heard of Atheists feeling threatened by those belief systems. It's more of a fear of the people involved in Christianity that make it such a horrible thing. Honestly, not only Atheists are threatened by Christianity but so are other cultues, religions and beliefs. How about those crusades for example? Missionaries "educating the savages?" Even the KKK uses Christianity as a tool. Every religion has their bad parts but I don't think any religion can compare to the amount of carnage and destruction invoked in the name of Christ and God. Manifest Destiny for one.

For the record, I am an Anglican, not an Atheist and even I feel the weird, almost violent pressure to be "more Christian" or as the republicans in the USA call it - conservative.

Most people have stability in their beliefs but Christianity tends to foster the absolute most intolerance despite its teachings. Christianity fosters too many rabid dogs like GW Bush who invoke God for destruction.

The threat Christianity poses to atheists (and other nonChristians) is real. Christianity breads militant intolerance and has resulted in millions of murders of nonChristians over the past 2000 years.

That said, the average maturity level of this forum is about 14, so you're going to get a lot of silly kids asking stupid and inflamatory questions.

What's the deal with the rash of questions that lump 'atheists' into a single mindset this morning? Don't you nutters realize the only thing we generally have in common is a lack of belief in your god (and other gods), and other than that are just members of the general population?

It has been my experience over the past 40 years that most Christians cannot speak about their faith in a rational manner. In almost ever instance they will become extremely angry if they are questioned about the irrationality of their beliefs and in most cases are unable to articulate what they really believe. I think that if you take the time to speak to most "atheists" that they have a better working knowledge of what is in the bible than most "Christians". Just as Christians believe they must spread the gospel and the word of God, many atheists fell obilgated to rationalize with what they believe is agruably an antiquated religion.

I am not threatened. Most do act rationally and ask mature questions. Why are christians threatened by Atheists? Reading over the Q & A's it appears more religious folks are ticked at Atheists for not believing in what they do.

I don't think it is so much atheists are "threatened by christianity", but more along the lines are tired of religions in general. I mean, if we look at it logically, evidence points to people that have religion live longer. Not to say a divine being is real, but if it helps a person get through the day so be it. Myself, on the otherhand, can't allow that to fit into my current belief system well. I mean, religion to me is absurd. I get irritated when I walk accross campus and have to dodge students that are throwing free bible's left and right. And when I don't accept one, or they force it into my hands and I toss it into the garbage next to them, immediately I'm the bad guy. Irony I guess. Christianity forces itself on others, that is why i personally dislike it more so than any other religion.

What... you mean apart from the fact that Christianity promotes the myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions of an ignorant bunch of Bronze Age fishermen and wandering goat herders, and declares them to represent some kind of cosmic 'TRUTH' (without the least bit of credible evidence)?

Apart from the fact that Christianity presents these impossibilities as 'true'?

*  a universe in which all that exists are the earth and heaven
*  solid 'firmmament' structure (the sky) seperating the earth from heaven (terrarium earth)
*  talking snakes and donkeys
*  demons chased out of people and into pigs
*  friendly spirits
*  evil spirits
*  walking on water
*  multiplying loaves and fishes
*  people raising from the dead
*  stopping the sun in its tracks
*  parting seas
*  people being bodily sucked up into heaven (which, by the way, lies on the 'other side' of the sky)
*  world-wide flood that drowned the earth to a depth of 40 feet above the tallest mountain
*  creating people from dust bunnies and ribs
*  magical tree of knowledge
*  god speaking from a burning bush
*  ritual cannibalism, by eating god in the form of a cracker.

OK then... apart from that, here's why. Dominionists have largely usurped the local level political apparatus of the Republican Party, and are engaged in a sub rosa process to politically motivate moderate Christians under the false cover of religious issues such as morality and family values. The goal is nothing less than the takeover of all elective offices in the USA.

Their doctrine comes from the Bible, starting with the term 'dominion' at Genesis 1:28... “And God said unto them, [Adam and Eve] Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have DOMINION… over every living thing.” They interpret DOMINION as: “... a supremacy in determining and directing the actions of others or in governing politically, socially, or personally.”

They want to remake the USA as a theocracy... and they are succeeding.

Wake up. Take a stand. Do something... for we are sowing the seeds of our own destruction, while these religious nut-jobs are awaiting God's demolition job.

Why do Christians feel the need to defend Christianity? You never hear anyone defend the fact that the sun will rise tomorrow. We know it will.

It is comparable to Christians attacking only 144000 going to heaven (JW) something that happens here a lot. There is little basis for it. Just as there is little to support God, evolution or the 144000.

Unfortunately when anything is up for debate you get the fanatical and misinformed and the usually steal the spotlight.

I feel threatened by Christians because I see the Christians in charge of the US making decisions that I think are bad for my country.

They have come out in favor of teaching pseudo-science in classrooms, against research that could ease the suffering of millions of Americans, and have firmly stood in the way of certain members of our society having the rights which are owed them.

I am threatened when I see superstition supplant reason as an acceptable explanation.

I am threatened when I see religious differences lead people around the world to fire rockets at each-other.

Do you want me to keep going?

I don't feel threatened at all. I just think it is blind stupidity in the face of fact. Fact Christians are killing Muslims in Iraq. Fact Muslims are killing Christians in Iraq. Which one has the correct religion? Why have more people been killed in the name of
God than for any other reason? If God is love then why all the hatred and killing? Why did God supposedly wipe out entire civilizations in the Old Testament? Seems like he has a lot of issues he needs to work through.
