Unopened as it comes, possibly indefinitely.
Once opened, and seldom is it sealed properly, I'd guess a "few" months.

The "firm film" accumulated is usually the pigment, which can be skimmed off, but the original color is diminished.

Possibly Acrylics and Latex may last longer than Oil Based Paints/Enamel.

Hey...... yes , being over 50 does count! :} You can store paint for a long time as long as you keep it from heat exposure, like the famous garage where we put EVERYTHING!
