Shirley Temple's mother would set her hair in Rag curls and Pin curls. Pin curls are where you take damp strands of hair ,then twist and roll up like a cinnamon bun and pin with 2 or more bobby pins. Rag curls are the same you just tie strips of rag around the rolled up hair. then you would sleep on it and in the morning take out pins or rags and then style. This is how Shirley's mother set her hair every day.

Believe it or not, they had permanent waves even back then. Was a totally different process than we are used to today. Since you are using Marilyn as an example, she also bleached her hair to platinum, ergo they had bleach back then too ! Marilyn's hair was naturally curly to begin with and she was a 'mousy brown' before the Hollywood Machine got it's hands on her. Great question, do some more research on 'old Hollywood' and how it was no more than a factory in the 1940's and it's main goal with to 'transform and produce' blond, pretty, curvaceous women, it really is an interesting topic to read about.

First, Marilyn Mornroe was not a product of the 40's. Second, they used a perm. If you want a similar look today without the permant effects of a perm, go down to your local beautry store and buy perm rods. Then, while your hair is wet, comb a curling gel (LA looks makes one of these) through your hair and roll it up section by section in the permrod. Let your hair dry and then spray with hair spray, unwinding the perm rods. To touch up, take a 1/2 inch curling iron and curl hair.

you can use a 3-barrel waving iron...it gives those nice "s" waves, but doesn't work very well if your hair gets frizzy easily.
