There are many Bassets looking for good homes that understand them. Far too many people get this breed, tie it up in the yard to bark all night and then give it away because it's a nuisance.
Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they have many rescue groups where you can get an older dog for less money.

The best breeders will be members of their breed club, promoting healthy dogs with great temperaments. They should ask you a bunch of questions to make sure their puppy will be getting a good home. If all a "breeder" seems to care about is whether your check will clear, you can be sure he won't care a week later when the pup is dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back.

sorry for your lost. i absolutely love bassets, they are so loaded with love with their little short bodies. try the local shelters. if you do not have any luck, then you may want to call Gloucester Humane, which is in Gloucester, for some reason they seems to have lots of beagles and bassets, sometimes a mixture of both. the reason i say this is because they use them for hunting and after hunting season is over a lot of the dogs are surrendered to the shelter or abandon, not all but i have seen a many of bassets and beagles come from that shelter to locate shelter to find homes...check that out...call local shelters first

Good for you....not that you had to have your basset put down but that you are searching for another one, check on line to see if there are any basset hound rescues close to you, there are many abused animals that would love to be in a loving home. Good luck in your search.

My heart goes out to you. Try Petfinder.com for any bassets in your area. If there aren't any, there are plenty of basset-sized dogs at the shelters and your local SPCA who need a good, loving home. Good luck.
I found this site very comforting:

I'm SO sorry for your loss. I've been through it and I know how painful it can be. BLESS YOU for wanting to give a homeless dog a second chance at a happy life!
Try www.petfinder.org. You can type in your zip code and also the breed you're looking for and you'll see all the ones in your area who need homes so desperately. They just want someone to love, and someone to love them.
We adopted both of our olden Retrievers from Rescue Groups, and found them both on the petfinder site.
