Too high to reach and probably couldn't even get a net into the tree. Have hung a cage there with food inside but he doesn't seem to go there. He is too lightweight to trip an animal trap. Must get him, can't survive a northern winter.

Hold your hand out and whistle. Shake a dish of birdseed with your other hand. The water hose answer should work, too, as long as you get him good the first try- when you point streaming water at something it's likely to leave!
Is the tree too high to reach with a step ladder?
Good luck!

If this budgie is alive then it has learned to survive. It could possibly have a family which would starve to death if you capture it. I suggest you leave food out for it but do not try to catch it. If it does not like it's environment it will come to you with time. It must learn to trust you first. They are trainable and will learn to survive winters by what other birds do. Remember that if this bird is depending on the food that you put out, it will learn to depend on it and not fend for itself or leave with the other birds when it should.

I would suggest using the cage that you have mentioned. Maybe do some research to find out what their favorite food is and place it in the cage. I would even see if you can find a decoy (a fake look alike) to help encourage him into the cage. I hope that this helps. Also maybe you can call your local game warden for some help.

Well, I'm not completely sure if this will work for your bird, because evey bird is different. But, about three years ago our cockateil flew away and we thought "for sure he's gone." But, we decided that we would just try, as crazy as it seemed, to put its birdcage up on our roof. About a week later, we were outside and we spotted the cockateil flying around our neighboorhood. And just as we had hoped, it flew into its cage after a while of flying around the area. Now I don't know if this will work for you but it did for us. :) :) :) Good Luck!

See if you can get a "fake" parakeet with and a recorder; place both in the open cage and play the parakeet sounds; the bird should fly in to see what all the hub bub's about!

put some wet lettuce on the ground and get ready to catch him if this doesnt work then wait until dark and then get a net and catch it as birds like budgies will not fly in the dark.

Get the garden hose, spray the bird; it wont harm him, just make his feathers heavy so he will go to the ground, then you can catch him.. Good luck!
