Follow up: assuming that it taste weird in those cups, why do so many people use them?

Styrofoam gives off a chemical residue when it is heated.

People continue to use them to keep their beverages warm - I don't use styrofoam. I think it is a excellent packing material and flotation device, but you won't catch me with a styrofoam cup.

try chewing a styrofoam cup. that's why coffe tastes bad in them. the flavour of the styrofoam corrupts the coffee.

but people insist on using them as they have good insulation properties, and coffee stays hotter longer.

Because coffee in Styrofoam cups is crap coffee to begin with- nothing to do with the cups

Ever try rinsing the dust out of the cup first, then putting the coffee in? It might change the taste around for you a bit.

i've heard that proclain (sp?) is actually the best way to drink coffee because how the materials react to the cups?

D is correct. People want a cheap form of insulation. Not worth it to me.
