Considering you probably meant "your community" ('our' makes no sense).......................
Well, I'm an Indian and really regret the fact that the English did leave a very long lasting effect after all...one that'll never go away..
ENGLISH...but when you think about it...i guess its one of those positive benefits of the British rule (although they did LOTS more damage ). It a mighty important link language and that's the status it enjoys... We have over a THOUSAND different languages (believe it ) in our country and English is becoming the common language that all know as our national language Hindi is not so dominant in the south. plus, its been a very important tool for us in this era of globalization when its a tacit agreement that English is the universal language.
In school, English is (hence) compulsory and we're also taught 2 additional languages of our choice. We also watch English movies and listen to western music... but this comfortableness in English is only significant in the newer generation. English is everywhere....computers, phones, government notices/ procedures, advertisements, sings and so on...(followed by the local language) so practically everybody (in the city) understands it at the least.
AND yes, we do tend to kill it a bit since its not OUR language and all...
(answers too long, no? Well, i hope you got the answer you were looking for at least.........)

I suppose that would depend on whose community your talking about.

Living in the USA, the answer might be "it's the common and unifying language." The flip side of that, in the USA, is that some communities hold languages such as Cherokee, Navajo, Spanish, Cajun, French to be very important too.

In our household, we speak English, but we also learn Spanish and German. We are aware that we are members of a global community. The USA is a member of the G-8 and other international alliances and cartels. So it is to your advantage to speak at least one language other than English.

This is not too hard for an intelligent citizen from a country which enjoys the best of all worlds, don't you think?

If you are living in an English speaking nation you have the opportunity to advance in life.
If you are living in a non-English speaking nation - you have the opportunity to move and advance, become a bilingual worker - have more job chances... advance in life.
Learning a second language is always a plus. Never lose the first one. They're both important.

You have to LOVE these postings by people who don't seem to understand this is an INTERNATIONAL SITE... when they ask a question like this and don't say WHERE their community and school is located it makes it very hard to answer.
