I just gave birth to my daughter on the 11th of this month and I had what my doctor called a star cut and episiotomy which he used only his hands/fingers to rip me open during the process according to my husband, I wasnt paying attention at the time considering. Is that legal to use your fingers to tear a woman open for labor or is it procedure to have to use scissors? He also was the one who stitched me up and because of too much pain I went back and found out he left a gause inside of me that was there for a week and 2 days, which following I got a UTI, dont know if the bacteria from the gause might have been what caused all of this? If anyone knows anything about all of this please let me know if things were done right or if I should report any of this if it is serious or any form of malpractice. Thanks!

Well I wouldn;t go by what your husband said.
Sometimes what happens is the Doctor uses his fingers to help stretch out your perineum so that the head can pass. That most likely is what he saw. If the head comes to fast then he is unable to use scissors to cut the perineum which is what the episiotomy is and most likely you tore.
Honey if you really had a gauze sewn into you you would have had a MASSIVE INFECTION., not a uti. I personally am having a hard time believing that a gauze pad was left inside of you as in order for him to find it he would have had to take out the sutures and dig around in there to find it. Who told you a gauze pad was left inside of you????

I do not consider your husband a reliable witness to a bloody medical procedure. Scissors were undoubtedly used. The nurses on the OB floor should have removed the sponges. It is possible they could be responsible for the infection. Don't sue an OB man for malpractice. This type of suit has caused most doctors to quit delivering babies completely.

In case of first delivery right at the end of labor ie when head reaches the outer opening of vagina, Episiotomy(cutting the lateral wall of vagina to wide open it)is an accepted emergency but minor prcedure that is routinely done. There is no time for doctor to ask and woman to consent for it.It is not malpractice .Ripping with bare fingers is done as it is not anticipated.UTI is to be treated.

I have never heard of a doc using this technique and it is negligent to leave a sponge inside a patient because they are supposed to do a sponge count. You could speak with an attorney but unless they cause you permanent damage,I doubt you have a lawsuit, you could report the doctor to the his licensing regulatory agency. It is possible that the sponge contributed to the infection.
