By the way- By asking this question I am not trying to provoke hatred or anger from either aethists or believers. If you feel the urge to insult just because you feel targeted, that's up to you.

Sorry but you are greatly generalizing. Out of the major world faith very few actively try and gain converts. Certain faiths are missionary faiths, meaning it is part of their belief structure to try and win converts.

Think for a second how many Hindu's knock on your door and try and convince you to believe in Hinduism? Or how many Buddhists are standing on corners preaching "the truth" to you? How many Jews or Shintos have you met who tried to convince you to convert?

You are really talking about just two of the major faiths.

I understand what you're saying but I just want to let you know that atheists do try to convert people and I think it's for the same reasons that Christians try to convert people, because they believe it will improve that persons existence. I've been visiting a page called godisimaginary.com that basically tries to convert religious people (mostly Christians) to becoming Atheists. They make allot of good points on the sight, but I'm not, nor was I ever a Christian, so most of the arguments don't work on me.

However, Atheists don't try to convert people nearly as much as Christians do. I think this is because most people come to Atheism on their own, being fed up with Christianity and religion in general. Atheism is much more logical than most religions which causes people to gravitate to it. Christians feel the need to "bring back their flock" by trying to convert those that have been "lost" to Atheism.

Because aethists Have a bad ending to look forward to , eternal hell fire. Who would want that to look forward to, that would be a hard sell. I belive I have heaven to look forward to, even if I am wrong, its a better way of life. But what if the aethist are wrong , not good!!!!! I as christain I want to share this, the good news to all of Gods people I can, why is this a bad thing? After all you make the choice.

No offense taken by the question..They try to convert them because they know where they are headed for their disbelief, it is out of love for people. If you notice any true CHRISTIAN won't answer a question with any harsh words, however there may be a few that will, but are they really sharing Gods love for them? Christians seem to get more hate filled questions and answers from Athiest, but your question was asked in a kind way. Thank You

Christianity is essentially a criminal business enterprise... in fact, it is the world's longest running and most successful Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scam. The product they are selling is 'salvation'. FORTUNATELY, it only works on those who are gullible enough to fall for it. UNfortunately, THAT accounts for about 87% of the population of the USA. (There are a lot more people who DON'T know how to think properly than there are people who DO know how to think properly.) That is why there are a lot more religious people in the USA than there are 'Free-thinkers'... including Atheists. Also, Christians are generally too dense to realize that proselytizing (spreading the 'good news') is a key element of the Christian MLM MARKETING PLAN, which was instituted after Christianity lost the political power that had previously allowed them to simply torture and kill anybody who did not comply. Now, they attempt to just pester people to death, through persistent obliviousness and obnoxiousness.

My Dear Tuumac:

Please open-up your eyes, mind and heart.
Yes some "Christians" not truly yet knowing the true message of Jesus Christ seem to be always 'trying to convert everyone'. You might called them zealots, nut cases or any of a hundred things. But in fairness to all they are no different than all other religions. Most of these "Christians" are so obvious that they can be very annoying to you and me. But they can give you a multitude of reasons why they believe in their God and why you should also!

Now Atheist on the other hand, use very vague, subtle, insidious sounding , sophisticated and pragmatic language to get their negative agenda to us. And they never give a multitude of reasons why they do not believe in God and why you shouldn't either!

Come on Tuumac, is your cup half full or is it half empty?

Religious people try to convert others for a variety of reasons. When I say, religious, I mean a person who have a belief or faith in God. Some religious want to convert because they want to share the good and positive side of their beliefs. Others do because it is passport of marrying a person of a different religion-to increase their tribes. In the olden days, a lot of people submit to conversion under a mighty sword-fear of persecution. Parents of course, want their children to be converted to the same faith they are practising. Christians spread their beliefs because it is their duty as written in the Holy Bible. On the other hand, atheists don't do because they are simply, unbelievers. If you don;t have faith, you don;t have guideline to convert people. If you don;t have faith in God, you can't feel the urge, duty or obligation to convert others. Thanks friend.

Christians are excited about the knowledge they have, and want to share it with everyone so they can have those same feelings. Atheists don't have the knowledge, they've turned away from God, so they don't have that excitement.

Not saying atheists don't have excitement in their lives, just not the same excitement that Christians do. As for the other religions, I don't know if they are excited about their beliefs or not, as I've never been anything but a Christian.

"Atheists" are not an organized, unified group. While there are some atheist organizations, the majority of atheists are simply defined by their lack of belief and could give a flip what everyone else believes. They simply desire "freedom from religion" ... so at times they will speak out when religious movements or groups attempt to overtake politics.

Because religious people consider conversion the difference between eternal pleasure and eternal torment. Put yourself in their (our) shoes. If you really believed that the only way to escape eternal torment was to convert to your system of beliefs, wouldn't you want to help others escape?

Since the atheist, in most cases, does not believe in an afterlife, conversion is much less of an issue.
