If he has short-term disability insurance at work, he needs to apply for benefits.

If not, he can apply for social security disability (SSDI), which can be done online. Go to the US website, firstgov.gov, and go to benefits, etc., then to the SSDI application form and instructions. Or he can go to the local SSA (Social Security Administration) office if there is one, but be prepared to wait and wait.
