Studies show that 8 hours are essential for your sleep cycle. It's important that you have a sufficient amount of sleep to increase your REM stage, which is thought to boost the immune system response. During a night of sleep, a person usually has about four or five periods of REM sleep, which are quite short at the beginning of the night and much longer at the end. Sleeping for too long can make you feel exhausted when you wake up. It allows for laziness to kick in. Also, when you get up, jump out of bed, because laying in the bed for a few more minutes will make you feel tired or lazy.

By medical terms it depends on your age. Say if you are between 20 & 35 - six to eight hours sleep is enough to make you fresh and agile next day. 40 & 55 - five to six is ideal. Siesta for senior citizen is also advisable.
