Good luck with that one - when you figure it out let me know, so I can get my boys to do the same. No matter how much you harp - it just takes up too much darn time and effort to raise that seat then put it back down!

Hi,
put together a "tote" with gloves, and cleaning supplies for bathroom, since he is 9, try to buy non toxic supplies - most health food stores sell them. make sure you include brush and paper towels etc.
every time you go in the bathroom and he has not raised the seat (cause you can tell)
have him clean the bathroom - whole thing, right then, no TV, going out, going back to TV or games - even if he is in bed and you have to get him up. Even if his friends are over - doesn't matter. He can't take "time" to lift seat, it will cost him a LOT more time cleaning bathroom.
after he has had to clean thebathroom about 10 times, he will get point. if he doesn't, then you will have a nice clean bathroom till he is 18 :)
don't let him off hook with "easy" time of it either - job done right or not at all. Not just seat, whole bathroom, mirrors behind toilet, walls floor, etc.
he has to learn that there are consiquences for his actions and you are not going to allow him to live like a P-I-G

my boys do the same. Not suprising really as their dad does it too!! My only solution to this problem is too leave the loo lid and seat up at all times (except when i need to go). That way you looseat stays fre of wee, and more hygenic, because it reminds you to clean it when ever a splash is made. Hard work in the short term but a lot less agro!!
Sorry i cant offer anymore girl friendly advice.

Try using a reward system. Make a chart up and everytime he remembers to lift the seat he gets a sticker of some sort. Eventually it will become a habit. The next trick is to teach him to put it back down when he has finished, though I am still trying to teach my husband that one!!

I have seen these little handles that yu can stick on the side and henn without you touching the seat you can lift it. Maybe he doesnt like touching the seat or maybe by putting the handle on it will be a novelty and he will want to lift it. YOu know how they always want to flush the loo once they have done it once.

do you give your children any chores??? he's 9...plenty old enough to have some...so i would make him clean the bathroom atleast once a week...and depending on how bad the toilet gets from not lifting the toilet...every other day....maybe then he'll understand what a mess he makes and start putting the seat up.

Tell him if he lifts the seat, he will be rewarded. Maybe give him an extra snack or let him stay up about 10 minutes past his bedtime.

I find that sometimes shouting "Lift the bloody seat up and aim at the water!" helps

The "Man Rule" is that the seat stays up. I know that doesn't seem to fly in matriarchal households, but you may want to consider bending the rules... it beats sitting on a wet seat!
