The following exchange took place at the Chicago airport between Robert I. Sherman of American Atheist Press and George H. W. Bush, on August 27 1987.
RS:
"What will you do to win the votes of Americans who are atheists?"
GB:
"I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me."
RS:
"Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?"
GB:
"No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."
RS:
"Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church?"
GB:
"Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists."

Why is your heading Typical Christian? I am a Christian and I am proud to be a Christian. I believe in God, The Lord Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit. Everyone has their own opinions about everything. But to me, religion is a choice. There are many choices in this life we have. Who are we to judge what some person says or what that person has done. There is only one Judge.

As far as taxes!! This country is taxed to death. This is nothing knew. People have paid taxes for years. That is part of life and no one likes it. Thank you for your question and you have a great day.

An atheist is not a true American, because our forefathers thought that if you subverted the word of God you could not even call yourself an American.
The separation of church and state is not in the constitution. It was suggested in a letter from one congressman to another, but never made it to the constitution. I have read it, you should try it sometime.

First of all, I would question the validity of this exchange, not because it is of the atheist press, but because the press itself has an agenda.

I have personally heard in live press conferences the president showing respect for several different religions, not by saying anything less of his personal belief, but by saying everyone has the same right to worship in this country. However, atheist worship nothing, so in that respect, maybe he hasn't any opinion on them.

In making these comments, Bush (the elder) disqualified himself from public office. Sadly many people living in America (I cannot honestly refer to them as "Americans") would support him on this.

Is this typical of Christians? I don't know. It's certainly not rare, but it may well be that the majority of Christians are not as bigoted and unpatriotic as Bush showed himself to be here.

That quote was from the previous President Bush, not his son. Dont you think that 19 year old quotes from people that have nothing to do with public policy today is a waste of yahoo server space?

Im not sure that this is so much a typical christian as it is typical Bush-league non (sense) logic.
Politicians are worse than religious zealots. At least the religious zealots believe in what they are trying to sell.

I agree with Westside. What is the question?
this is a rant. Against Christians? or against Bush?
Bush is not a typical christian, if that was the question. There are Christans who are not Americans.
shh - don't tell the Americans

More proof that the US is becoming an Theocracy, and less of a Democracy.

And if God loves America so much, why did he give all the oil to countries that hate America?
