Why do CERTAIN people lay in the sun knowing good and well that it can be very harmful to your skin? Do they really wanna look black? I just never understood this.

Sun exposure in small amounts is sufficient to get enough vitamin D (15 minutes per day in the summer). It can help with eczema and psoriasis. But trying to tan is not good for you in any way, shape, or form. People tan because they think tanned skin looks healthy and attractive. But a tan of any degree actually is reflective of skin damage, which eventually catches up to the tanner in the form of wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer---attractive, huh?

People just want that healthy tan glow. I don't think people really want to look black, they just want tan skin to look healthier. Lots of people spend too much time in the sun and end up looking like leather. That is not attractive

It wasn't that long ago that pasty-white skin was a sign of prestige because it meant that you were rich and didn't have to work out in the fields or ever go out into the hot sun.

Then, when more and more jobs moved indoors, a tan became the sign of wealth because it meant that you could afford to vacation in tropical, sunny, warm places instead of working.

People do a LOT of stupid things for fashion, perceived beauty, and status. Why does any girl wear high heels? They're uncomfortable, unstable, and bad for your feet. But they look great, don't they?

it's not wanting to look black, but to look sun-kissed or tanned. well, some people do this because they don't wanna look too sun-deprived (especially here in southern california). some do this to hide skin imperfections (though im with you on uv rays being bad and in the long run their skin would look even worst if they had too much). and mostly they don't wanna use tanning lotions. it doesn't agree with some skin types and it looks orange-y.

The truth about tanning and how it is potentially GOOD for you. Vitamin D deficiency? Try sunbathing! Eczema? Try laying in the sun a while!
