If it is her best friend's sister and her best friend is not sick, then the chances of her catching anything is pretty slim but still greater than zero. There are several different kinds of meningitis and they can be devastating. Some are caused by a bacteria and some by viruses. The health department may make recommendations on prophylactic antibiotics or immunizations to your daughter's friends family depending on the results. Those with DIRECT contact with the patient may be given antibiotics, and in areas with many cases of meningitis, they may recommend vaccination. If your daughter has not had direct contact with the sister or baby she should be just fine, and would be excluded from the list needing antibiotics.

Yes stay clear. The results should be back in a day or 2 so it won't be long.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to have your daughter checked out. Highly recommend she stay clear of her friend until notified of test results. This is VERY contagious.

It's a good idea to limit or avoid contact until you know one way or another because meningitis is VERY contagious.
