6 months would be ideal except in circumstances where someone is attending college to help better themselves. I also believe that you should not receive more just because you pop out tons of babies. One more thing to add-you cannot live with person in a domestic relationship and not report thier income as well. Welfare needs to be revamped completely!

As a black man, let me be the first to say YES!!! Welfare shouldn't be a way for people to make a living but some money someone gets in between jobs like unemployment. And having new babies should be a decrease in amount that you get. Also, if you have had 2 babies since you got on welfare you should get nothing more. Additionally, you should also have your tubes tied for free if you are on welfare. The longer you had your last job the more you should get paid on welfare. Also, the gov't claims it can't afford to oversee the welfare system the way it should be, but give me $1 billion I will find a way to fix ALL the problems with it and hire someone to oversee it in EVERY state. If you can't prove you have been applying for jobs (and not sabotaging your applications) EVERY week you get no pay for those weeks. The billion dollars could have come from the $100 billion we spent in destroying and rebuilding (piss-poorly at that) Iraq.

After Clinton's re-haul of the welfare system in the 90's, there were many limitations and provisos placed on welfare recipients. Now, there is usually a maximum amount of time in each state that a person, depending upon their circumstances, may receive assistance. These provisos and limitations vary from state to state.
While it is easy to point fingers and place blame, it generally does not add much to resolving difficult issues.
BTW, as an aside, the government will pay for tubal ligation or birth control, free of charge, if one is on assistance and wants it.

You should have narrowed your question a bit.
I, too, have some help from the Welfare system, but I worked
for over 30 years and am now disabled with cancer and
other health problems. My advice to you.....get a pension or
retirement plan. I am living proof that you can survive on
living "below" the poverty level. All those years I worked, and
paid into the system, and for what....?

I think it is clear that many abuse the system and I wish there was a way to stop them. But it has value. Single mothers can get an education while on welfare, thus improving life for their families. (One Case.)
But why do you suppose we have more welfare dollars going to illegal immigrants who don't ever pay taxes, work on the side, and send their money to Mexico or elsewhere. This should stop, as well as women who spit out babies to collect more money.
The system is broken and needs a major overhaul.

Be grateful you have a job. I can understand your anger against people who abuse the system, but in case you haven't noticed, our government is exporting jobs. Most Americans are one paycheck away from homelessness. Be thankful this hasn't happened to you yet. And rather than resent welfare recipients, whose tax dollars are miniscule, I'd recommend directing your rage at Bush for wasting hundreds of Billions of dollars in a war to kill innocent people and steal their natural resources so his cronies can get even richer. It would be one thing if we were all at least getting free gasoline out of the deal, but instead, our tax dollars have financed the rich oil companies to go in there, steal the oil, and then charge us three times more than before the war. Ranting about welfare recipients is misplaced energy.

If more jobs were available I'd say sure but when you can make more on welfare and not have to put your kids in daycare, why not? I think something about the minimum wage being raised might be a start.

i think there should be some limit on welfare. i'm not sure i understand how it works. i had a friend on it for years and never looked for a job. i tried when i was out of work and looking for work and the amount they would give me didn't amount to squat!! didn't make sense to me. theres got to me more regulation on it. some people really need it. i know daycare is outrageous. i've got 2 kids i raise on my own. but, thats my problem, i work 2 jobs to support my kids. no one else should have to support me and my kids.
