It would have been mighty strange not to at that time in jerusalem.

What do you think?

Not a da vinci code question, just based on historical understanding of that time in history.

It doesnt say He was anywhere in the bible that He was married or that He fell in love or anything like that. I can already see the comments being made about Jesus if they read this answer, about Him being queer and always hanging around guys. Anyway, lets get real here for a second. If Christ was married, dont you think He had enough love and pride in His wife that He wouldnt keep it a secret. Christ didnt do what was typical and thats y People hated Him, or didnt understand Him, or just thought He was there doing miracles by the power of satan. He turned the world upside down. So if you believe the bible then come to your conclusion, cause the divinci code didnt prove nothing, except how rich this guy got off this stuff. Now he has a playstation game out on it.

To answer Trollhair's question (2nd answerer), as well as HarryBore's, IT DOES MATTER. Christianity has been based on Jesus being above all earthly pleasures such as marriage and fatherhood, and as such Catholic orders have been founded with the principles of celibacy. The last thing the Christian authorities (most especially the Catholic church) would want is to be exposed that their entire theology has been based on lies.

Personally, I have no trouble whatsoever believing that Jesus may have indeed married Mary Magdalene and had a child.

-----

And to Sheeny (Two answers before mine): "The Bible" is nothing more than a collection of different writings by different people, and those that have formed the Bible where carefully selected for self-serving reasons. There are other books written that could have made it to the Bible and didn't, and one of them is precisely the Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

-----

To Ingrid C (Four answers below me): It is ridiculous to assume that priests "don't feel attraction for women". Many priests HAVE HAD sexual relationships and have fathered children. The only ones who may not, may also be gay, which doesn't stop them from feeling attraction.

If anything they're encouraged to practice self-control. As a matter of fact, one time that I had made an appointment to talk to a priest about the annulment of my marriage, the first thing I noticed on his desk, WAS a book on coping with celibacy. That should speak volumes!

I agree it is possible that Jesus was married--nothing about Him being in a married relationship would undermine His sinlessness; however, I do not believe that if He was married that He had earthly children. The Bible indicates that our sinful nature, which is present from the moment we are conceived, is inherited through our earthly father; that is why the virgin birth was necessary. If a sinless man fathered children, they too would be without inherited sin (in theory); while the Bible does not mention Christ being married (or unmarried), it does say (in no uncertain terms) that Christ was and is the only One without sin. Back on the issue of marriage, the Bible describes the Church as the Bride of Christ--while this may be symbolic, I am not sure this mention would be made repeatedly without mention or parallelism to Jesus' earthly wife if he had one. Also, I cannot imagine that Jesus, when hanging on the cross, had something to say to His mother but not His wife.

The bible does not specifically pointed it out. But some bible researchers say the wedding at canaan was actually his. Because it is not the custom of the hebrew guest then to supply food, especially wines for the guest. It is to be shouldered by the bridegroom.
Then, the bible states that mary magdalene is a constant companion and have touched him in several occassions. It is not in the custom of them to have females always around and have a chance to touch a man unless he be his close relavtive or husband.
At the crucifixion, mary magdalene was there. The customs again disallows women to view the naked body of those nailed on the cross unless she be a close relative or wife.
facts are really strange than fiction, and the truth shall open your mind and set you free.

To answer your question based on a historical understanding, I believe that he would have been married. My personal opinion is that the lack of mention in the Bible is more telling than most would claim. The Bible doesn't mention his marital status either way, however it does make specific reference to Peter being single. Why would it be necessary to make a reference to Peter being single, but not mention Jesus? I believe that is because Jesus was of the majority of Jewish men of that time, married, and probably with children. The authors of the Bible make no mention of this because they see no need to. It was the normal tradition back then, they assumed that we would all know it to be fact.

he moved around quite a bit (if what the bible says is accurate in a historical way- personally very dubious) this might mean that if he was it was someone who traveled with him.

i hear you though. it was..... well almost un heard of not to be married at this time. marriage was a natural progression in life...... as was making babies but i shall not digress into da vinci code areas.

another thought; the bible really stresses that Jesus was man of flesh and blood and human needs and wants. That god (his daddy) made him flesh to suffer and experience joy as any human would.

therefore it could be suggested that the sort of strong feelings which lead people to be married were quite possibly experienced by Jesus and maybe he acted on them. he was only human after all.

plus he sounds like a kinda lover of love, of peace, nice people, good wine and adventure.....he'd be the type to fall in love. :)

people who make the point of saying that is was normal jewish custom to be married by the age of 30 seem to forget about John the Baptist. If Jesus, through the "unknown years" between 12 and 30 actually joined a Jewish sect INSTEAD of learning a trade, then it would have been very NORMAL for Jesus NOT to have been married. John and Jesus knew each other and loved each other, so they obviously spent time together, although it is not clear as to when and where.

The New Testament gives no record of Jesus being married (or not). Paul, in 1 Corinthians chapter 7, when he discuss whether a Christian should marry or not, mentions that Peter and some of the other disciples where married (and that their wives traveled with them) so marriage was acceptable. But Paul was singled and though that was the better option. He does not mention whether Jesus was married or not.

As far as non-Bible sources, there is again no mention of Jesus being married (or not) in any of the "gnostic gospels" or any other writting that can be shown to pre-date 1000AD.

As the New Testament list his mother, step-father, cousins, aunt, uncle, half brothers, and half sisters, it seems odd to me that if he was married, it would totally ignore any reference to his wife.

Jesus could have been married - there are 18 years in his life where nothing is recorded in the Bible. But, if Jesus had been married, it would be an important event, so surely it would have been written about in the Bible. As it is not, I have reason to believe He was not married.

It would have been VERY unusual for a man of that age not to be married in those days. I think there is quite a bit of evidence that Jesus was actually married to Mary Magdalen.
