Please note I'm asking who invented it not who patented it. I heard a good story about the conception of the idea and am trying to investigate further. I'm talking about the wood drill bit that is commonly used. I know the name Auger derives from the person who patented it but who actually came up with the idea?

It's based on the Archimedes screw principle, so I guess the original concept was invented by the ancient Greeks.

Who Invented The Auger

You might be barking up the wrong tree.

My American Heritage Dictionary gives the etymology of auger as from the Old English word "nafogar"----meaning auger.

That the old English has the word indicates the tool is just as old. I suspect the inventor's name might be lost to history.

Though the Patent Office does have its slip-ups, there are no patents given for established devices. I would be very surprised indeed, if something like this slid by the the patent examiners.

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/79slO
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.
