She may be saying she doesn't want anything because she knows your financial situation and doesn't want to burden your wallet. Try some thoughtful home-made things... burn her a cd of "your songs", make her dinner, pick her some fresh flowers... putting forth an effort in romance is often more precious than maxing out your credit card.

There are plenty of things that you can do with little money.
You could pick up some flowers for her. Even if they aren't the kind she likes, she'll be impressed you got her flowers.
You could cook a simple meal for her. Much like the flowers, it doesn't matter so much what you cook. The fact that you took time and effort to make the meal will count. (Making pasta is cheap and good)
Rent a romantic movie from Blockbuster. or if romance isn't in the cards, maybe a comedy or something she really wanted to see.

you don't need money, just make a home-make birthday card for you. All you need is a sheet of paper and some colored pencils.
Put some time into it, make a few "drafts" before you make the final one.
I had a girl friend who gives me a home-made birthday card ever year. It is an incredible gift, I love it. It is easy to go out and buy a card or buy a gift, but making a home-make, custom, personal birthday card is really special and takes some effort.

There are some women who say they don't want anything, but then get mad if you don't get them something. Some women really don't want anything. If you're short on cash, why don't you make her something for her birthday? Most women I know LOVE getting stuff that their boyfriends or husbands made for them, because it's personal, and it shows you put thought into your gift. You could make her a CD of all her favorite songs, or simply make up a list of the top 25 reasons why you like her/why you're glad she was born. Wrap it into a scroll and tie a ribbon around it. Or you could give her a 'coupon' you made up yourself, good for a free backrub, or for a time that you'll do the dishes for her, or fill up her car with gas......there are lots of options. Be creative, and whatever you make her I'm sure she'll love.

Be frank with her. Tell her that your are broke now and would give her a birthday present on her next birthday. She will understand. My gf who is my wife now, said the same thing that your gf said when I told her I could not afford her a birthday present, ie " I do not want anything " We spent her birthday gazing the stars. We were very happy just being together.

If I was aware of your financial situation, I'd probably say the same thing... but mean that I don't want you to *buy* anything. Dinner cooked by you, flowers that you pick (or a simple bouquet that you purchase), a card, and lots of attention would work for me. Make her feel special on her special day!

If you live in the northern hemisphere then how about a picnic or spend the night pampering her. Watch her favourite movie and actually stay awake for it. Run her a bath, cook dinner, foot massage? Do all those things that are just for her. BEST PRESENT EVER!!
