They are both very different if you are going for QUALITY product, you can get one that does both, but will do neither particularly well.

I would purchase a juicer, maybe a jack lalane one that collects only juice and discards the pulp, also with a juicer you have the option of introducing veggies into the drink, something that would not be possible using a smoothie.

Anyway, I always found you could use a regular blender instead of a smoothie maker.

if you plan to use both the juicer and blender, go ahead and invest in a nice one with both functions. you will save space in your kitchen.

if you do decide to get just a blender, i wouldn't get the smoothie-maker kind (they usually have a spout). i had one with a spout, and it started leaking after a few months. Also, we could not use it for blending other foods-- like hummus or soup. you can find a good blender that crushes ice and has a glass jar for $50 or so.

Both, juicer is good in summer, blender is great in summer for the smoothies but also fabulous in winter for blending those soups.

Mate I bought a juicer and only used it once.

It took hours to prepare the 2 kilos of fruit required to get one small glass of juice.

It then took hours to clean the frigging thing.

not worth the hassle just buy some fresh juice from the supermarket mate..
