Thumbelina sounds cute....as a cats name !
Remind your friend that her daughter's name will be shortened to "Thumb" at school - and the endless teasing that will create will become your friends problem -
That'll make her sorry for inflicting the name on her poor innocent
daughter.
(and what if this little girl grows up to be really tall / fat - Thumbelina wont be so fitting then !!

Thubelina would work just fine with a single syllable last name like Smith or Jones, but if the last name will be something like Robertson or Schovelovich, then you'd need to balance that with a polysyllabic middle name like Hepzibah, or you can always go ethnic with a name like Shaquana. If you're still undecided, why choose at all, pick em all...Thumbelina Hepziba Shaquana McLoughlin. Cool!

That's a terrible name for a kid. Great fairy tale, but terrible kid name.
I once heard that a good rule of thumb is to picture your kid's name announced at their Presidential Inauguration. If the name would make a stupid President's name, then you should probably think of another one. President Thumbelina [Yourlastname]? Yeah, not so great.

Egad! What is that woman smoking? Yes, she's mental. There oughta be a law against naming your kid stupid stuff.
A while back, twice during the same mall trip, I heard two kids being yelled at by their mamas who were named Armani and Miata. I'm not making this up! How ghetto is that??? Sheesh!

I think that when naming a child that it is important to consider that they will have to live with it for a long time and will probably have it picked on at school (especially if different) and shortened throughout their life - 'thumb' is not the nicest name to call a child.

It would be OK if your friends daughter was about 2 inches tall, but if that is not the case, then tell him to re-think maybe just go for the easy option, something like Jazz, Dizzy, Kitty, Tinker Bell, you know something ordinary
