The Elantra is probably the best value on the road right now.
In the U.S., Hyundai just finished 1st in initial customer satisfaction (how satisfied new owners are within the first 90 days after purchase).
You can get an Elantra, loaded (A/C, CD, automatic), for under $13,000.
The only negative is that they don't hold their value very well because they discount the new one's so much.
If you keep a car for a long time, consider this car as a #1 option.
If you are going to trade your car in in less than 5 years, look toward the Toyota Corolla, which holds its resale value better.

Still there are some people who don't know much about Hyundai cars... Infact, they repeat the same old " Hyundai is crap" s**t but Hyundai is one of the best brands in the world now.. Not to mention that they have gained the third spot in reliability ratings next to Porsche and Lexus and Hyundai Sonata was named "the most reliable car 2004".. I don't have an Hyundai but my friends do.. They are very reliable, roomy, solid, have a good gas milage and comfortable.. But 2003+ Hyundais are said to be the best i don't know much about older versions but according to those two girls, even 2000 models are as reliable as new ones.. Just don't be afraid to go for an Hyundai...

I have a 2000 Hyundai Accent and I love it; it should be considered the "Timex of cars". It has been a very reliable car despite being "totalled" by the insurance company 4 years ago after an auto accident and rear ended twice (minor damage in both cases). Only repair, beside fixing the insurance damage and regular oil changes/spark plugs etc. has been a fuel relay sensor went out 3 months ago. Another added bonus, especially with fuel prices, it that I only have to buy a tank of gas or a week (I live within 10 miles of where I work).

What does it say in Consumer Reports or the book Lemon-Aid?
Hyundai used to be a very bad brand of computers and cars.

I have a 03 Elantra Hatchback GT, I LOVE it!!!! I think it was a great value for the money, nice, leather, tint, a/c, stereo upgrade, alum alloy wheels, the super warranty - I think I got a great deal compared to my last car (Honda Accord)
