I am wondering what can be done to stop this or if I just have to be super vigilant.

He's an adult. Less easy to steer around than a sleepy kid.

I have not experienced any person sleep walking but there is a link to help you to find more info on it.

I have however been sleep walking for myself. My mom told me that i did it often when i was small. It is dangerous and you should always keep an eye on a person who sleep walks. My mom says that you just have to gently help the sleep walker to return back to bed. She also said that you must not wake a person up when they are sleep walking as it is bad for their health.

It would be helpful to know how old the person is that sleep walks. If it is a child, you put hooks at the top of the door so they won't get outside, unplug appliances or anything else they might use. If it is an adult, make sure the car keys are put away, same with appliances, and doors.

Hopefully you are a light sleeper.

It would depend on how often it happens and the person's age and how they have reacted when sleepwalking in the past. If they just are disoriented, you can many times just lead them gently back to bed gently, talking to them in a calm, soothing voice, without waking them up. To be woken up or wake up when you have been sleepwalking can be terrifying and some totally freak out.

If they have ever become violent or overly upset or if it happens often have them see a doctor to try to find the root of the problem; it could be stress or there could be something wrong physiologically, if you don't it could be a timebomb waiting to go off.

i know that when my kids would walk in their sleep or have crying nightmares, 9 times out of ten, it was because they had to use the bathroom. without waking them, i would just steer them in the right direction and in a quiet voice coax them to do their deed. i suppose, it may be true with an adult too

Well, it's true it's very dangerous sleep walking, when I was a child I had personally some experiences...I've heard that only a brother or sister should awaken the person sleep walking.
