There is actually a sensible and reasonable explanation for this. Becuase of how nuts are produced, packets of, for example, Brazil Nuts may contain traces of other nuts. Because people tend to be allergic to one particular type of nut, and in fact peanuts, the most common allergy are not nuts but legumes, they need to have this information to prevent them from having an allergic reaction. So, it's not for the dumb, it's for those who care about not getting sick.

Because lots of people have nut allergies and are stupid enough to eat them anyway and then asinine enough to sue over it. (They are nuts!) Companies are just covering their butts from frivilous lawsuits. Sometimes it is helpful though I have seen warnings on foods that had nothing to do with nuts saying it was manufactured by a machine that also processed nuts and therefore may have nut residue.....ewwww!

because someone - possibly american - ate some peanuts and got sick as they did not realise peanut are nuts! It is to stop people sueing them, also tea from maccy d's says warning contents may be hot for the same reason - incidently if my tea isn't hot I'm taking it back!

I know it sounds dumb but I believe the FDA requires this label so those that are allergic to nuts will know.
I'm with you. It is pretty dumb when you can plainly see what's in the package - but...

because there are some mind-bogglingly stupid people in this world who would make such mistakes, and due to the compensation culture we live in, they would probably attempt to blame and be compensated for by someone else for their own stupidity.
