No it doesn't taste the same.
You can make food taste VERY good on a gas grill by using hickory or mesquite wood chips with a smoke box and put it inside the grill. My hubby does that, and his chicken is delectible.
If you're the type person who's hung-up on having the latest and greatest, go ahead and get a gas grill. If you don't really care about "appearances", and you really do like the taste of your food when it comes off the charcoal, stick with it.
If your friend is really that concerned about your bbq, tell him to invite you over and bbq for you so you can see for yourself what the food tastes like. :) If you don't like it, then your friend will just have to get over it and understand that you like what you like. Don't sacrifice your taste preference just to keep up with the current trend.

Gas grills may be faster and easier to use, but I don't think food cooked on them tastes as good. You cannot reproduce the smokey flavor of a charcoal grill on a gas grill. Who says there's anything wrong with charcoal grills. Kingsford still makes a huge profit selling charcoal so you are not alone! =)

Well down in Texas contrary to common belief "We don't BBQ with propane and propane accessories." Anyone who says it taste the same has not ever relay had properly smoked BBQ. Although some Yankee folks call grilling and BBQ the same. Believe me they are not. BBQ is cooked with heat (You know hard wood), a good rub (seasoning) and smoke. Grilling is just heat and some seasoning. If you are still in doubt come on down to Texas some time and we will show you what its all about.

No, it doesn't taste the same. I live in a city where you can cook over coals. My daughter lives in a city where you're not allowed to use coals and have to use gas (burns cleaner). They don't like the taste of their barbecued stuff as they do when we barbecue. And the prep until that point is the same.

Try putting some wood chips on the gas Barbie! Oak or any fruit wood is nice, but hickory is best! You deffinately won't taste any difference between gas & charcoal. (not that there IS any)

Better taste with coal- it's much nicer in all respects, and cheaper, better feeling with an authentic barbie. An Aussie wouldn't do it any other way. It just takes a little more time to heat up.

I don't think so, charcoal give the food a better smoky flavor that a gas grill can't touch!

not exactly...but you can come pretty close by adding things to it....ie:
wet wood chips ( for a smokey flavor )
wet mesquite chips ( self-explanatory )
a note: we've never missed the taste of charcoal grilling enough to give up the ease and convenience of gas grilling....we even grill outside in the winter and we live in NY.
