I am an Australian citizen travelling to the USA on a visa-waver programme which allows Australians to enter and stay in the USA for up to 90 days without a visa. If i get married when I am there, will I be made to go back to Australia and re-apply for a visa or will I be allowed to stay and apply for residency from America?

No, you will not be allowed to stay. On the visa waiver, you cannot change status, extend your stay, or apply for residency. You may, however, get married if you want to!

Then your husband can file an I-130 petition for you to recieve an immigrant visa. When the petition is approved, you can apply for the visa and enter the US as an immigrant. In the meantime, you can visit as often as you want/can afford to as long as you don't overstay the 90-day limit.

Here is a lot of correct and official information for you, both on the visa waiver and on the immigrant visa process.

When you enter the country with visitors visa you have to tell them what is the purpose of your coming to that country..if you planning to get married later..don't forget to mention it and you would hear what is the decision if you can or not depends on your case.. and then you can apply and stay for the extension of your visa until your residency would be granted...
I think you can get both marry in US , but the possibility of granting your residency later would depend on your documents submitted.. so never forget to mentioned that you are planning to get married that it would proved your intention. then whatever the decision..you can plan to go back home and re- apply if it is what should be done..
but the visit you would gonna do at first would be the strong support to your documents later..you should have strong and genuine relations to support your application..
if this won't help much.. inquire US embassy in Australia.

That's something you should definitely ask your local U.S. consulate before you leave. Or check the State Department website at www.state.gov

No! Go home! We have no room here!
Here's a thought: Take her to YOUR country! I hear it's beautiful. If you truly love each other, she won't have a problem going with you. good luck, Mate!
