As part of my degree I have decided to compare and contrast the effect of mental illness of a small number of well known artists. Do you know of any artists which have produced work which has been heavily influenced by their state of mind, and why. Thankyou in advance for your time.

If you really want to do some first hand research for your paper, there is a museum in an Asylum in Queens, NY. I forget the name of the place, but the art work there is from the inmates. I have to tell you that it is some amazing pieces of work.

It is a misconception that any signficant percentage of artists who achieved fame tend to suffer from condtions regarded as mental illnesses. One of the finest scholars on the subject is Rudolf Arnheim, a Harvard Psychologist specializing in studies of art. Arnheim studied the artwork of the mentally ill. He systematically displays and analyzes the work of such artisans and elaborates on the significant peculiarities that characterize the artwork of such patients.

It is important to differentiate between one who suffers from insanity and creates art, in contrast with the artisan who produces viable artwork, and, reveals an unstable temperment and /or difficult personality, that seems to accompany the creative mind.

there was talk that Van Gogh either suffered from bipolar, or he had some sort of inner ear problem, which literally drove him crazy. I think it would be interesting to find out what inspired Munch to paint "The Scream"; what a great explore you have ahead of you! Good luck

Michelangelo, had Bipolar disorder. With this disorder people go through manic cycles where they require very little to no sleep, have grandiose ideas, think fast, talk fast, and usually need some sort of "project" to occupy this period. Now, tell me he wasn't manic when he painted the Sistine Chapel?
