When I sold the car, I simply signed over the title to the new owner, trusting that he would take the title to the DMV to have the title transfered to his name. But, if he fails to do so, can I be held liable for something bad that might happen while he operates the vehicle? Thanks for the input!

You make sure that you have done all your side correctly and that you keep a note of his name and address, go see the DMV to check hes done it right

Yes you can! on the pink slip it says on the top do not detach till sold, this must be filled out by you and the buyer, and then you must mail it to Sacramento, to release your liability, if you do this is don't mater what he or she does your covered, if this was not done you must go to the dmv and fill out a paper stating how much you sold it for and to whom, and then and only then is your liability is reversed, so get er done quick if they get in a wreck before you do this you are fully responsible no matter what city or state you live in

well i know in pa. you are responsible for what he does until the dmv gets the paper work signed and noterized, usually when i sell a vehicle i go to a notory and have them witness me signing it and i give the name and adress of the person buying it they give me a form for him to take to his notory with the title in 5 to 7 days,if he does not or uses the the vehicle in the meantime he is responsible.

You should have a sign & notorized copy of the bill of Sale. That will release you from the liabilty if something does happen with the vehicle.

i thought the registration document had 2 parts- one for the seller, and one for the buyer?

if i had bought a car, the first thing i would do is send the form off, to get transferred into my name.
