You are obviously compassionate, and that's not a bad thing, of course. DogDoc is right, "sight hounds" as this group is called (Italian Greyhounds, Whippets & Greyhounds) have for years been bred for lean, muscled sleekness. I have 2 iggys (Italian Greyhounds) and they are lean and very healthy dogs. Pretty funny, tho, I have neighbors who jokingly tell me to feed those dogs some BACON whenever they see me walking them......

A healthy greyhound or whippet has a truly amazing physique.
Forget 'thin' and think lean and muscular. They are beautiful animals and are perfectly built sprinters.
The next time you see one look at the muscles on the hindquarters, shoulders and neck. They also have a line of muscle running on either side of the spine which is so well developed and hard it feels like bone.
I have seen greyhounds/whippets and lurchers out of condition and bony when they have been underfed and neglected but a properly cared for dog should never look like that.
I think you are mistaken to group whippets, greyhounds and thin dogs all together. You can get thin Labradors and Rottweilers which probably do need some feeding but a greyhound in good condition would not benefit from your concern.
They may not be cuddly but they are stunning and retired greyhounds can be wonderful pets.
A woman who had worked all her life with greyhounds once told me that racing greyhounds are the most abused of all the dog breeds. From what I was told it would seem that the thousands of greyhounds killed by the dog slayer for profit were luckier than many retired dogs exported for vivisection.
Some of these 'retired' dogs are not much more than puppies who have failed to show promise as racing dogs.

You have not looked at these animals very closely!
If you think they are thin that is only in appearance. Check out the running gear. Put your hand on their muscles. Their back leg muscles are very thick for running the prey down. Front chest is also heavy in muscle. This is to help the animal turn at high speeds. The back and ribs are designed to help the animal breath as it runs. Over feeding them can be very harmful for them. Body fat would cause them to overheat while running hard chasing their prey which is what the hounds were bred to do.

I feel the need to feed thin dogs that are starved but the breed of dog you are speaking of are thin because of their body type and their metabolism. So I guess the answer is No

To each his own.I guess that is why there are so many breeds of dogs.
I personally love long tall thin elegant dogs who are built to run down prey.
I think they are elegant and love the muscle structure on them.
I am not a fan of chubby fluffly poofy dogs. Nor anything very tiny and small with huge attitude. But since I train I work with the ones who need help.

Beauty is in the eye... its those obese slobs make me want to barf and the long leggy dogs that look ellagant. Then again I cant understand how someone can look at the kind of muscle mass a well conditioned grey or whippet carries and call them thin- leggy yes, thin no.

i personally love the sleek looks of these breeds. Theres nothing more disgusting than an overweight dog whoses owners obviously don't care they are over feeding their precious pooch and want to slowly kill it. Better a slightly under weight dog than an obese one who could drop dead any minute through exhaustion and pressure on the heart.

Healthy GreyHounds are going to look thin. Their bodies are very long and thin-it's normal for that particular breed.

No cause feeding it would not make it easier to pet (as far as petting a bony feeling dog goes) They are good animals in general just look like they need a square meal in them. They as in Grey hounds seem in my opinion seem to be friendly dogs.so I can accept them as they are. I do understand what you mean though.

How many human runners/sprinters are all chubby and roly-poly? Sighthounds are athletes!
When I had one of mine in to the Vet recently my Vet took a step back and said "SHE is BUFF"! That is the way they should be, lean and hard.
