The official figure of 'mother tongues' spoken in India is 1,683, of which an estimated 850 are in daily use.
However, only 21 are officially recognized languages in India, namely:

Thers 2 main groups Dravidic ( Tamil Nadu) and Indo European Hindi.
Hindi, Urdu,Punjabi,Shindi,Gujerati are some among many North Indians Indo European dialects they are similar
Tamil, Telegu and .... hmmm many more form the Dravidic Asian language
