I reccommend you kill it first...
No live chicken enjoys having its feathers plucked out!
:-D
Honestly, I presume you mean a fresh one.
You have to pull out all the feathers, once you've got all of them off, you can remove the little ones over a gas burner (stove) by turning the flame up and passing the chicken over it several times...(The burning feathers don't smell very nice, but this is the best way to get rid of'em) Then rinse it off, rub dry with a rough cloth and remove the parts you won't use (head, feet, etc.) Cut it in half and remove the innards... Keep the liver (check that the little bile sac (green stuff) hasn't burst on it. If so discard it.) Throw the rest out. And now cook your chicken as you like. If you want to roast it whole, once you have cut the head off you can enlarge the opening a bit and pull the innards out from there, or do the same from the other end underneath the tail feather area.

They're on sale now at the grocery store... wouldn't it be easier to just buy one that's ready for cooking?

You start by giving it its LAST RIGHTS.
Then, you find that you have a change of
heart and become a Vegan. Set the chicken
free and grow tomatos.

I hope you mean a "fresh" chicken! I cannot and will not answer until you clarify.
