As long as he's not actually lighting his cigarettes and smoking them right there in the middle of service or inside the church, I don't see why it would be an issue.

As far as not smoking in the church, it's more a matter of respect than hiding it or anything. I know lots of Christians who smoke. Should they quit? Yes. Do they know that? Of course they do. Does it effect the state of their immortal soul? Of course not.

Any church that says you can't attend, or that you can't be Christian, or that they are going to push you on this issue to the point that they are going to make you choose between God /church and smoking really doesn't have their priorities in the right order, and I would seriously consider finding a new church that puts more focus on the state of my soul than my lungs.

By the way, I'm a Christian who has never smoked a day in my life, and this is still my opinion on it.

EVERYBODY has their issue, some of us more than others. You can be a good christian and still smoke, doesn't mean you shouldn't work on it but you can smoke. Pastor, if I knew him well, could politley suggest would be good idea to stop but otherwise is none of his business. If he brought it up I would tell him so and to remove the stick from his own *ss - er eye- first and then leave. A grown man should not be afraid for his pastor to find out he smokes and a good pastor should know there isn't one member of his congregation, inluding himself, that is without a similar sin-maybe even worse. The Christian part is trying your best to change as much as you can, it may take him awhile to change that part of him. #1 reason I quit going to church is too many holier-than thou's. One man had the gall to chastise my mother for missing church 2 Sundays in a row then he ended up in jail for molesting a child on his son's littleleague team. Another church had a true-hearted member that was poor and doing his best for his family and trying to be the best christain he could be and the pastor kicked him off a public event because he smoked and it looked bad on the church. So does your attitute and 400 lbs pal! Your Christian relationship is with God and no one else. Keep that in mind and you'll stay a Christian longer.

While your pastor can say he wants wants him to stop smoking because it is bad for his health, he cannot tell him he has to stop smoking to come to church. I know pastors who smoke, I know church members who smoke. This really should not be an issue, if it is, find a new church.

I smoke on the way to church and some adults smoke in the parking lot. It's not encouraged by any means, but no one should say anything as long as you don't smoke in or during church.

tell him the church is full of ppl who want to heal, thats why they r there, they r all trying...Many people are taken aback at what the Church teaches...the fact remains that there is no middle ground, smoking is not acceptable-however ur friend needs to see the reason why it is 'wrong'-it is unhealthy, thats all and though he finds it hard to imagine giving it up-the prayer and meeting together will help him overcome it-im sure ur pastor wud be a good friend to him and not 'preach'. being a pastor he wud guide him.

I don't understand. What dose smoking cigarettes have to do with church? Where in the Bible dose it say that smoking is a sin. To my understanding smoking is a health issue, not a religious one...
Unless he lights up in church!

encourage him to keep going to church, I once heard my Pastor say, Smoking will not keep you out of heaven, if will however get you there more quickly......he cant be expected to change overnight.....encourage him to come to church....and let God take care of the rest.

No one smoked when the Bible was written - he should go ahead and smoke. Besides, Jesus loved a drink.
