If the body is impermanent why do we say we have a soul?
That suggests that we think there is something permanent about impermanence.

If the soul is like a person, the body is like a shirt. As the shirt wears out, the person discards it and wears another shirt. So, the person is, in a limited sense, like the permanent soul; and the body is like the shirt that is discarded.

There is no confusion thus far. But, what happens to the Soul after it leaves the body? The answer to this is given differently by different Religions. That is where the idea of re-birth comes in too.

Some people dont care about life after death. Take your pick.

I think people believe that the soul is actually not included with the body. It can drift freely out once the persons body quits functioning. Remember those experiments where they weighed an animal (or person?) before death (or at the moment of death), and after to see if a soul could be detected leaving the body?

Don't think of the soul as a physical thing. It isn't comprised of matter, but energy instead. The true form of energy, energy as you know can not be destroyed. So since all matter contains energy, when we die the energy within our body will leave our body. Where does it go? Well that depends on what your beliefs are.

The soul transcends what we know of matter, mass, and energy.

Dear friend,
to give you an example, just as you throw your old clothes or stop wearing them so to say..the soul also leaves the body to enter a new one after gaining experience perhaps the highest of it.All this may seem bookish but that's the truth..one gets to know and learn from his experience (good or bad) and this is something we all are here for-gaining experience..One who is close to GOD and thinks every work that he does as serving him is the happiest of all (at least i think so)..As MOTHER THERESA had quoted - it was all between u and him(GOD),it was never between u and them(people) anyway..

Because your body houses your soul. The body is temporary...and the soul lives forever.

Deep man, deep.

My guess is that someone at some point thought about the big, empty abyss of death and wanted to thwart it somehow.

On that note, I'm out. Peace, love and nerve gas.

the body is a shell which contains your soul. your being. your essance. when the body dies, your soul is freed. perhaps to zoom into a newborn baby? go on to the after life? Heaven? Hell? i cannot say...

An object cannot be mass-free and physical, it cannot react with energy without having energy and mass is just condensed energy. In order to react with the brain it must have mass, but in order to be invisible it must be mass free. In order to be undamagable it needs to be mass free, but in order to see it requires photoreceptors and energy measuring devices which need to interact with the physical world.
