Viva La Raza stands for "The Race" correct? Or is it something else?

Well.. that doesn't make any sense.. Mexicans are not of any race. Mexican is a nationality! Not a race!

And.. whatever it means that "Viva La Raza" is..being shouted-- arn't those the same people that call us racist?

Am I wrong here or does that not show a bit of hypocrisy?

Yes, so-called Chicanos use that phrase without even knowing what they're saying and I hate it.

I am Mexican, I was raised and educated in Mexico. Let me tell you where that phrase comes from. At the beginning of the XX century there was a philosopher called José Vasconcelos who wrote a book called "La Raza Cósmica" and its main message was that most Mexicans and Hispanis have the honor of belonging to many races at the same time (e.g., most Mexicans have European and native American blood), so he said Hispanics where the beginning of the "cosmic race" or the human race that has all the races combined in it (rather cool, because then there wouldn't be "racial" problems). So every educated person in Mexico knows that "La Raza" refers to Mexicans or Hispanics, as accepting people. Yet these Chicano groups use the phrase to distinguish and set themselves apart, when in reality Vasconcelos wanted it to be a message of cross race unity.

This just shows the ignorance on which the whole Chicano movement is based on. Everything is mythic (they can't stop talking about Aztlan, even though respected historians admit that is a myth and there is no evidence to conclude where the place was, if it existed at all. Chicanos should educate themselves. Have you seen the so-called "Chicano studies" classes? What is that about? It's not Mexican, that's for sure. They reject both American and Mexican culture and isolate themselves.

1. u kinda got a point! ur right, mexican is not a race but a nationality! that is why mexican are not the only ones that say that! when people say "Viva La Raza" it doesnt just mean mexicans, it means all hispanice races! alot of hispanic people including cubans, puerto ricans, etc. not just mexicans consider themselves part of "La Raza"! so in a way ur wrong! u probably dont know this because u probably only hear mexicans saying it! i know this because im mexican-american, but i too learned this fact not to long ago! i thought the same as u, that only mexicans say "Viva La Raza"!

2. dont think most mexicans are racist because we're not! and i hope that neither are u!

You are wrong (slightly).See, these days only white american and european people are racist. Black people and those from south america (that speak a language other than English) are just 'bitter' from all those centuries of slavery and racial degradation.I'm not sure why this applies since most of us were born way after our ancestors were freed from bondage but whatever. This is me just being politically correct.

As for the whole 'mexicans are not of any race' thing, people talk about them as if they were so its only natural for them to feel that way. and don't take the phrase 'viva la razza' literally. It's just a phrase to encourage the younger generations to be proud of their heritage and of who they are. It doesn't actually mean "long live the race".

And if Asian's a race.
And if European/other nationalitys whose people are white's a race,
Why isn't mexican a race? seriously I don't know.
