as it says in the question... i'm looking for a map that i can pinpoint where i've been in the world. any ideas?

Download Google Earth. You can stick pins on places you have been, with little labels. You type in the name or postcode of a place and it will either take you to it, or list the options. It's excellent, everyone should have it. It's free to download, and fairly simple to use - you'll have it sorted in a flash. As people before me have pointed out, it is exactly what you're looking for.
It's like a 2D image of the world. You can find your own home etc, it will find most landmarks. It's really cool to look at. Basically it flies through the world to show you. I believe it is based on pictures taken from a satellite. You will love it if that's what you're looking for, even just as a tool of curiosity.

Google Earth mate, you'll love it. I reckon it's the best thing since sliced bread. Problem is I can spend hours on it.
