I they are scared of the dark, tell them that there are no monsters/ghosts/whatever, and we feel scared, because things look different in the dark and we can't see easily where we are going. I recommend introducing them to the dark as a fact of life, that they can easily deal with.
Fiddle about with the light switch, and show the practical difference. Play small challenges to get across the room and stuff with the light switched of, and someone there to switch it on in case of trouble (DON'T say in case you're scared). Enjoy stuff in candle light.
Most children don't fear the dark until it is suggested, even as subconscious warnings or example. Without that suggested danger, kids usually find the dark to be and adventure and a challenge with very little encouragement.
This will probably help you get over your fear too.

i bought a bottle of air freshener and put my own lable on it . it was scary-b-gone. i would spray it after turning the lights off and it would get rid of all the things that go bump in the night . this really helped and my kids thought it was real and it worked . so they were more secure that it got rid of all the ghost and other things that lingered in the room and under the bed or closet .
however i wasnt scared of the dark or ghosts so for an adult i cant say what will help there .

Tell them they are no Ghost, if you believe in God pray before going to sleep and tell them that God will protect them against anything. Ghosts are not real they are just myths, unless you really want to believe in them, then you will start thinking that they are real and start jumping at any sound.

Have you seen Monster's Inc.? Its very helpful in this issue. and please try to avoid scary movies...
I had experienced this type for kids and even boys from 10-17 years in our scout group. Kids tend to develope some kind of illness associated with fear, anything to prevent them from joining a night walk and staying for watch up. the best way is to train them in such environment, such as playing hide and seek in a dark house.
