If you want to go lighter, you need to bleach your hair first and then dye it. You should consider going to a stylist to get it done, there are many hues of color in every ones hair and nobody has the same hues...so the color has to be mixed by someone who knows what they are doing. Good luck.

Putting light hair color over a darker color wont do anything, For a lighter tone you can use bleach with a light toner... If your looking to go just a shade or two lighter then I would recomend washing your hair with a good shampoo and baking soda to get alot of the color out, then using a lightener, Then a lighter hair color.. If you go to Sally's beauty supplies they can help you find a good one. If you are going to use the bleach make sure you get a toner, and make sure you get a voilet mix in avoid redness/brassyness.. If you go to a hair supplie store they can defanitly help you pick out the right things and help you understand how to use them. Of course nothing beats getting it fix professionally.

It might make the condition of your hair fragile. Light colors may not cover a dark color. It depends on the shade.
