The middle ages when all this "controlling" happened was also know as the dark ages. I guess we're still left in the dark now. you're question demands a lot of questioning and i dont think people are deep enough to think of it that way. Thanks for bringing out your opinion...we need people thinking out of the cage (or was it box?). *wink*

The Catholic church has given poor people opportunities, food and shelter; fought the spread of viralent Islam during the crusades; contributed VASTLY to the development of art and culture and given more charity and aid than any other organization in the last 1500 years. Just so you know, Protestants have only been around for about 500 years and Catholics about 1700. Nice try though on your time estimate you brainwashed imp. The Catholic church doesn't tell people to strap TNT to their bodies and blow up innocent women and children at night clubs like certain other religions do. Also, most countries that have large Catholic populations(US, France, UK, Italy) actually contribute positively to the Global community. Their populations don't live in mud huts and while capitalizing solely on oil.

For most of that 2000 years most people were not able to read. And sometimes the only person in the community who could read and write was the towns religious leader. So many of the people had to rely on the church. But in the past 200 years most western nation have been able to maintain a literacy rate of 90% and you can see now that the Church's have much less power.

Today even though I am a christian, I wouldn't say I am controlled by them. For the most part I care less what they say.

But if you look in other parts of the world you can see this same thing happening. In many parts of Africa and the Middle East there are many illiterate people who still must rely on the religious leaders.

I think that people tend to submit themselves to something they see as greater than themselves. These tend to be very honest people, in that their ability to run their own lives always seems to run amuck.

Unfortunately, there is error in many of the Protestant denominations, and pretty much in all Roman Catholics. Hopefully the message of Grace through faith in the Lord Jesus gets through it all.

I find the word " controlled" to be not the rule to describe it, but rather 'influenced.'

religion is power! but not for the last 2000 years... i guess its a way to keep people inline. And its not just with these groups. Some religion beheads the offenders...

Religion doesnt control people. Christian religion is an attempt to teach people about Christ.
