how smart is a border collie, not sure but i remember it was choosen as one of the TOP 10 Smartest Dog. and it ranked top 5. on the other hand, afghan hound voted to be the dumbest of all dogs.

i've seen smartest dog lists where they top the list.

we've got a 14 yr old border collie and he is incredibly smart.
they do love to have jobs, but his job is family pet. he has an incredibly high emotional intelligence which has made us all love him immensely.
we sometimes call him 'stoopid' but that's because it's sometimes hard for us to remember he isnt human!
so whatever he does that may be real dumb for a human is often incredibly smart for a doggie.

extremely smart.. if you don't give them a job, they will create their own, and you are not likely to appreciate it...so, they gotta have a job.
