We live in an aparment and have a 16month od daughter. we are looking for a dog that is fairly small, short haired, good with kids, and mild-mannered. Is a beagle a good dog? any other suggestions?

Beagles are too high energy for an apartment..Many, or most of them are also incessant barkers any time they are Left alone.

I would recommend a Boston Terrier, Cavalier King Charles, Bichon Frise, Poodle or Pug..all are kind and patient with babies and toddlers..

English Toy Spaniel (King Charles Spaniel) is a better choice. I speak from first hand experience they are the sweetest dogs. Smart and funny too. Loves kids. Doesn't need a lot of exercise and loves to stay inside with the family.

Most terrier breeds have the potential to become agressive with strangers and kids so you might want to stay away from them. Also, many dogs that are breed originally for hunting tend not to do well in apartments.

Keep in mind the toy breeds are most likely to adapt to apartment life. But choose wisely, some do not do well with younger children.

Good luck. I still vote for the English Toy Spaniel :-)

Having a beale in an apartment is like setting a bomb off in the apartment...They are very activiity and need to run alot...I no this for a fact,I used to have a beale...Your best bit,Is a miniature poodle...They don't shed at all...Very smart and easy to train...The only up keep is a hair cut when she needs it...You will really enjoy a miniature poodle...

Beagles are very sweet with kids, but they hate to be alone. Their howling and barking may irritate your neighbors! They will also drag you down the street and are nearly impossible to obedience train. I prefer Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

I think that a beagle is a good choice depending on what facial etc. features you like. I would recommend a miniature pommeranium, maltese terrier and a maltese shitzu as good choices well.

Why dont you go to your local rescue centre, they have lots of small dogs looking for homes. And the staff there will be able to help you choose a small dog with the proper temprament to be with children.

beagle are good. basset hound would also be a good choice. stay away from cockers and chihuahuas. they are notorious for biting babies. also poodles may be a little high strung for such a young child. they can be a little nippy also,.
