he sees the vet regulary and is up to date on all of his shots. I have had him dewormed and asked the vet to help. he suggested getting a different cat food, one more specific to his age. i tried this to no avail. i have also tried giving him canned cat food and treats. he eats a little and then turns his nose up at it. he has lost two pounds in the past year. he weighed 10 and is now down to 8 he is a very tall cat and he looks emaciated . is there something that i could try? I have two dogs and another cat that are all doing fine.

the vet did blood work-up. I received him four years ago, when his owner passed away. he was the only pet. i had the dogs when he arrived. we found the other cat when he was about 5-6 weeks old about a year ago and he is getting FAT, with all of the food changes i am trying for the other cat.

Firstly, I would limit the treats and canned food. Although cats love them, the treats especially are just like cookies for people - yummy but full of no real nutritional value. I spoil my cat with them once or twice a week usually.
Some of the higher quality cat foods are more nutritionally balanced and might help sort out what's going on. Science Diet and Iams both make good formulas specific to age and need.
Also keep an eye out for parasites. Even if a cat has been wormed, it might not have been vaccinated for all the different types. Those yucky critters are constantly evolving too so they can get in there anyway. When you clean the box, look for changes in her bowel movements or the presence of what looks like white or brown rice - these would be tapeworms. I recently had to treat my girl for tapeworms even though she'd been wormed.
Good luck & I hope he's feeling better soon!

First of all your vet should be more concerned about your senior cat. Anytime a older cat abruptly changes eating habits may be a sign of cancer or a blockage.
If you have changed the cats food gradually then there should be no reason for the cat to not adjust. If however, you did a change abruptly then this may the cause of your finicky eater. Also, you state that the weight loss has happened in the past year. So, I may assume this loss was not over a short period of time?
For peace of mind, I would schedule an appointment with a different vet for a second opinion. Ask the new vet office staff to request your pets records from the former vet. This will assist him in not repeating unnecessary testing and will allow him to see what results were found, and lastly if blood work is repeated then a comparrison will be easier. Also, If you haven't already had one I recommend you having an X-ray done to see if any masses or blockages are visible.
Good luck.

Go see a different vet. Your cat most likely has some medical problem or needs to have his teeth looked at, and your first vet should not have recommended a different food for unusual weight loss. Seeing a vet would be your best bet, as you can't really trust your pet's health to people on the internet.
Good luck!

Try some special alone and quality time with just your cat allowing no other animals to interrupt or access your sessions alone with him. Special cooing and grooming and attention may do the trick. He may feel your shared attention to the others means you dont really care for him especiallly if they came to into the house after him. Im assuming that your vet has run enough bloodwork and testing to prove he does not have an illness.

The fact of changing its diet could be all right. However since it has not worked, I would suggest that you checked his teeth. I have a geriatric cat (15 years old) who lossed two thirds of his weight, apart from that he started to avoid all kinds of foods. A teeth claning has almost totally solved the problem.

He could be dehidrated, or have a liver problem. I strongly suggest you take him to another vet and get a blood check! A blood check is very important when teh vets and you dont know whats wrong with the animal! Thats the fist thing your vetenarian should have done!
