The reason for the question is because the projector will mainly be used for video game purposes. However, Being the only form of a tv in the house, we might come into some problems.

Yes, a projector is just an output device, like a computer monitor.

No you will not need a receiver to tune video signals if a) you have a cable box or b) you have a satellite in these cases the boxes will do the tuning for you and outputs a single signal which can be run directly into the projector. If you are not using either (I don't know why you would not) then yes you would need some sort of receiver, cheapest one I know of would be a plain old VCR. you would simply plug the cable into the input of the VCR and connect the input of the projector to the video output of the VCR. now in order to get any sound you would need some form of Stereo system since most projectors do not come with built in speakers.

NO! When you subscribe to cable, you get a receiver called the cable box. You only need a receiver if you want to pick up broadcasts with an antenna.
