Why would you want to do such a thing?? Are you going to eat that elephant?? did that elephant cause you any pain or discomfort in your life?? Did he tax your income..arrest you for speeding or drinking?? Did he spank you when you were young..or rape you as a child??
WHY??

The 458 Winchester Magnum, introduced in 1956 pretty much ended the reign of big a$$ British doubles. The days of the 500 Nitro Express, the 600 Nitro Express, the .700 Nitro Holland and Holland were over. The H & H 375 gained some acceptance with a handful of "out there" hunters but was never really widely accepted.
So..to answer your question..the 458 Winchester Magnum, with 500 grain, 45 caliber bullet putting out 5000 ft pds of energy (at the muzzle) is more than adeqaute for elephant hunting.

A .458 can be loaded with many weights and types of bullets.
If you want to penetrate the skull you would need a heavy jacketed bullet. If you were shooting at the side to hit vital organs you would need a bullet that expands maybe even a hollow point.
Last year I used a Winchester .458 LOTT for varmint hunting.
The 600 grain Barnes Burner Bullets left nothing but fur and sauce.

I'm from the East African Wildlife Society, thanks for your IP address, it will be passed on to the nearest wildlife authority near you. If one is not present, your local police will be contacted and a car will be dispatched and a possible investigation can be conduted. If this is only some joke, you may explain it as such to your local authorities. If you are found to have intended to use this weapon for the capture/killing of wildlife, a warrant will be issued for your arrest. I suggest you have your papers in order.
Good Day
No I'm just joking, but how did that feel? I am an officer of the EAWA but no action will be taken because there is no evidence to suggest that you were goin to perform the action you first described. I advise you to be very wary about what you say in the future.

Yes,
Back in the day of "the great white hunter" calibers lesser,
like the .416 rigby and others brought down elephants.
It is said that Bell dropped one with a single 7X57 placed
behind the ear.Of course he was an experienced shot and
expert big game hunter.
